I regret to inform anyone and everyone who reads this blog that I am officially taking my focus away from Fashionista's Guide to Halifax (as if that wasn't already obvious from my general lack of posting recently).

Like all things, this too must end. Lately I've been taken in so many new directions, and have become inspired by so many other writing projects. As a result I can't seem to put the effort into this blog that I should. Never fear, I'm sure at some point I'll have the overwhelming urge to post some thoughts on the world of fashion, but for now, I'm saying adios!

Dev, Music, Fashion

Although I think the new girl on the music scene, Dev, might become annoying pretty quickly (much like Ke$ha - who, can I just mention, horrifies me pretty frequently with her fashion choices.. and makeup.. and lyrics - is that just me?), I have to love this video for it's sheer focus on fashion:

I truly appreciate that aspect of fun!

I was excited to check out hellz-bellz.com because they styled the video, but their online store doesn't have a very wide selection! On the plus side though, they ship to Canada.

T.O. Shopping Trip

I just returned from a shopping trip in Toronto (shopping for both work and pleasure). We got some fabulous finds for the gift shop, but I'm most excited about the fashion finds to fill my closet!

Hopefully I will have time to upload pictures soon, but to hold you over and give you a taste, here is a photo from this super little chain in T.O. called Katie. I bought this dress from the shop, where everything is one-size-fits-all (but scooped the photo from their facebook group)!

Good Fashion to all and to all a Good Night

Haven't posted in a while - I have been working on some other writing, but in the spirit of Christmas I thought I would post some sewing projects that were gifts for the holidays!

Constructed from 'hello kitty' fabric from the thrift store, I crafted a yoga mat bag, which can also be used as a bag for rolled paper for it's new owner, who goes to NSCAD! The pillow, made from a men's shirt, holds your remote and cell phone in its pockets!

Not long before Christmas, I attended the Intermediate Fashion Show at NSCAD with my lovely friends Missy and Will. We really fell in love with unique pieces like the shirt with the filled in pieces in the back and the large comfortable looking hoods. We also loved lines including the masculine pieces with the neutral color palette and the beautiful tan pieces!

Ze Halloween Recap

Surprise, surprise - I couldn't decide on one Halloween costume! This resulted in, among other things, one very darling (I hope) mouse costume and one slightly ridiculous Damsel in Distress costume.

You can see my mouse costume below. Also, here I am as a Damsel (you can't really see the tracks, but they are there, I promise). Also, I seem to be being threatened with a bloody knife by a fisherman...

I think the Damsel costume was totally cute (and gave me an excuse to wear this nude-colored high waisted bubble skirt which does not seem appropriate on any other occasion), but I may have to cast my vote for the mouse because it was much more obvious.

Through the run of the weekend, four Halloween parties, one trip to Pacifico, and one Halloween potluck, I saw many fabulous costumes including Cindy Lou Hoo and the Grinch, a sexy batman, a clever duct tape princess, a fabulous scarecrow, a sweet maid, and Hollywood trash.

It is no wonder, after all of that, that Halloween is one of my favorite holidays!

The Halloween Costume Dilemma

With only a few days to Halloween, I am still trying to settle on the perfect costume. After giving up on my "pink panther" idea because I could not find the perfect pink tights, I am caught between two ideas: a Mouse (the classic ears-on-a-headband type costume, and an homage to Mean Girls?)

Or Damsel in Distress (inspired by Nell Fenwick from the Dudley Do-Right Show, complete with train tracks).

Turbine Showcase 2010

In other October news, it's time to begin contemplating the biggest fall fashion question of all - what will you wear for Halloween? Will you go for the classic mildly (or mainly) skimpy costume, or the total fashion route?

The Ultimate Shopping List for a Fall Spree

1. Anna Sui nail polish - something like a Passion Pink can bring summer sensations into September. Plus, the rose shaped bottles are so desirable. They have the Anna Sui beauty line - and hopefully the polish - at Sears (plenty of locations around Hali)

2. Some adorable flats, like those from Pretty Ballerinas, the Montreal based shop with a gift for perfect foot fashion. There is only a bit of time between sandals and boots, so I feel it's best to make the most of September with totally cute styles.

Coming to Canada, a Vancouver shop called "Holly" after Audrey Hepburn's classic character in Breakfast at Tiffany's. The store will stock many different popular lines, including 7 For All Mankind and House of Harlow.

Also coming to Toronto and Edmonton - Victoria's Secret! It looks like Canadian girls are about to get just that much sexier.

Bringing the Heat

Thursday night was a fabulous combination of laughter, lingerie and a truly great cause. (Plus some shirtless men to round out the evening)

The HRM Firemen Calendar Release Party seemed to be a smashing success with the help of Jokers Comedy Club, Perry Paris, Fallon Jones, and some rock-hard abs. I arrived with some friends and my sister in tow, receiving a warm greeting and some steamy calendars from some brave firemen out on the street.

We enjoyed the atmosphere in Jokers, having never been there before. Perry Paris stopped by our table to say hi, completely confusing my sister who is not so in-tune with the blogosphere or the fashion world. My props to her though - she rocked her effortless look in a bright green plaid shirt this night and fit right in.

Then, it was time for some laughs and some fashion. The comedians were killer, including the hilarious Mark Little, and the Second Chance Couture lingerie had people sweating in their seats!

I spotted Vanessa Furlong on stage and remembered that I had fallen in love with some pieces from her Ness'pAs fall line:

(Post event, after some facebooking, we set a date to meet up at her studio soon to do a little (un)necessary splurging.)

At the end of the night the HRM Firemen strutted their stuff on the runway and reminded us that the evening had been for a very important cause - all proceeds went to the Nova Scotia Firefighters Burn Treatment Society.

I have to extend my congrats to everyone who was part of the event. Combining comedy and fashion was genius - it brought people into the seats who might not have been interested in fashion, but who saw that the runway can be just as entertaining as some so-funny-you-might-pee-your-pants style comedy.

Forever 21 has come out with a maternity line. Check out the first article I read about this lovely occurrence here.

So, does creating a fashionable line of maternity clothing encourage teens to get pregnant? I think that's a stretch. Girls with a bun in the oven deserve to look fabulous too.

Also, I could have sworn I am of the appropriate age group to be wearing Forever 21? And although it makes me cringe to admit this, I have quite a few friends from high school who are having babies. And like moi, I'm sure that they want some $20 cardigans and $10 jeans.

Oh, and P.S., teen moms exist, and they have to wear clothes too. Seriously, if tv has taught me anything it's that life is hard enough for a teen mom, without worrying that you can't find an affordable summer dress or cozy winter sweater!

Of course, like so many things we drool over online, Love 21 Maternity is only available in the States. Never fear Halifax fashionistas, I'm sure that like the Faith 21 line, success with this line will mean it makes its way over the border.

Farewell to the Queen!

As the Queen heads out of Halifax, we breath a sigh of relief that the city will return to normal (following the insanity of Canada Day). Although I missed out on seeing her during her visit, I am sure she wore some dashing hats and bright colors.

The Queen's history is tightly linked to fashion. Following her coronation as Queen, she embarked on a six month tour of the Commonwealth. She enlisted the help of Norman Hartnell, influential designer and dressmaker to the Queen, to create over 100 new outfits for the trip! The clothing sent subtle but deliberate messages about the queen's status, and paid homage to the places she was visiting.

Although she moved from fairytale ball-gowns, to crisp tailoring, and back to softer lines depending on the decade, the Queen can't be described as a slave to fashion. Another of her personal designers, Hardy Amies, revealed in his autobiography that he often tried to persuade her to wear shorter skirts, but that she always made her decision based on what she might be doing in her travels - while visiting Pakistan she was once asked to ride an elephant! A short skirt simply would not do!

Both designers described her as a woman who listens to advice, but who has a keen sense of what suits her and is not swayed by the fashions of the day.

Of course, her fashion challenges are much different than those that we deal with in our everyday lives - she was once presented with a ceremonial feather cloak (above) from the Maori people of New Zealand - imagine accessorizing that!

When stars expand into Fashion

On my fashion radar today: celebrity fashion lines. Madonna and her daughter Lourdes are soon coming out with a potentially fabulous, potentially disasterous line of clothing mixing tough and feminine pieces. (Check out Paris à la Mode for a glimpse at Madonna's style.)

Why do so many celebs want to design clothing? I think the truth is, we all wear clothing (hopefully), and we all have our own preferences about style and what we wear. When you have enough money to really do anything you want, it makes sense that so many want to share their own style... sometimes successfully. Sometimes not.

Mary Kate and AshleyOlsen's line Elizabeth and James seems like a departure from their baggy boho style, but the pieces are romantic.

Victoria Beckham, of course, can design fabulous dresses in her sleep

What celeb would you like to see come out with a fashion line? Lady Gaga? It is so hard to tell these days - I personally was totally excited for Nicole Richie's Winter Kate line, but I don't really enjoy all of the patterns. The designs, though, really are true to her style.

Out of the Blue: A Letter from Lesotho

When Emma Fitzgerald told me about the projects she was working on with repurposed denim, I eagerly offered up my scrap denim pieces from hemmed jeans. I only really fully understood the purpose behind the project when I visited her at the Artists' Quarter on Agricola St. this week.

Emma was born in Lesotho, the small landlocked country surrounded by South Africa. She recently spent some time at Ross Creek Centre for the Arts working on her art, and now she is showing pieces inspired by the impact of the denim industry on Lesotho. The country produces 26 million pairs of jeans every year, in factories criticized for poor wages, mistreatment of staff, and pollution of waterways.

Although I absolutely love fashion, and a good pair of jeans, Emma's exhibit is important in reminding us of the potential costs of the clothing we wear. After leaving the exhibit my friends and I had to comment on how striking one image was, of the blue denim dye washing into a river in Lesotho.

Fashion Focus

Things I have learned this year:

1. Making your own clothing is easier than you would think (check out NSCAD Extended Studies courses to learn to sew - thanks Anne!)

2. Shopping is even easier. Living in the South End has been dangerous for me - Joanne David and Allie's Boutique are both on my block! If you're not lucky enough to live in my prime location, you can always check them out on facebook to see what's new!

3. Vintage is in! It is unbelievable how often I hear people talking about their latest vintage find, and people seem to be getting more into the trend. Whether you love vintage because its good for the earth, good for the pocketbook, or just plain good style, you are in the right city - Elsie's Used Clothing, Dressed in Time, and The Clothes Horse are bursting with great finds, along with many others!

4. Halifax is a fashionable city. I began this blog thinking that perhaps I would run out of things to write about and have to expand, but it has opened my eyes to such a huge fashion community in the city. Thanks to fellow fashion bloggers like Perry Paris and local designers like Lisa Drader-Murphy, the local fashion scene is booming!

5. Style is alive and well. It's easy to become disheartened by everyday appearances of pajama pants, or the "come-back" of shoulder pads, but the truth is stylish people still rule the world! I see stylish people in all aspects of my life these days, and it is fabulous.

A Whole Year of Fashion Complete

Today marks the one year anniversary of A Fashionista's Guide to Halifax! I can't believe I have been writing the blog for a whole year, and honestly it has taken me to so many fun events and pushed me to do so many fun projects. I didn't expect it to become such a part of my life!

Here is a recap of the year:

I began the blog talking about my favorite trends for summer: bright dresses, bright nail polish, and Alfred Sung. The summer held some longing for Montreal, and lots of love for the fashion world. In the fall I exposed my love of Rachel Zoe’s book “Style A to Zoe”, and of various fashion blogs. I also attended my first Atlantic Fashion Week and fell in love with designs by Sunsets on the Eastside and Veronica MacIssac.

Leading up to Christmas, I embarked on the 25 Days of Fashion, during which I posted my outfits for each day and gave everything I didn’t wear in those 25 days to charity! It was a great way to get into the holiday spirit. In honor of the new year, I also posted my top 5 charitable causes, because being charitable is always fashionable.

The Winter also had me signing up for my first sewing class at NSCAD, and planning a trip to Toronto! My crazy fashion new years resolutions included gaining 25 blog followers (and other things like meeting Jeanne Beker, which likely will not happen, but one can dream). While mourning the death of Alexander McQueen I posted about my adventures in Toronto, giving you the scoop on Forever 21, Leigh & Harlow, Fresh Collective and Katie.

In the Spring I challenged myself to make fashion fun – I dressed as my favorite cartoon females for a week! With a little help from friends, I think I pulled off some great looks inspired by the likes of April O’Neil, Daisy Duck, and Daphne from Scooby Doo. I posted my thoughts on many fashion events in Hali in the Spring as well, from Atlantic Fashion Week, to the Dress for Success Tea Party/Fashion Show, to NSCAD’s Wearable Art Show (my highlight was definitely the Pheonix Dress, by Derrick Dixon). All were fabulous and represented the diverse world of fashion in Halifax.

Recently my posts have focused on more events in the Hali fashion world, including networking events at Urbanity and Turbine. It is gearing up to be a busy and fashionable summer, so stay tuned. Thanks for reading!

Thursday at Turbine

On Thursday night I ran to Turbine after work for their "Kick off your Weekend" event. We drank some lovely bubbly, and Cindy Wheeler of Customizing Wardrobes dished out fashion advice. It was a totally fabulous way to spend the night before my birthday!

I picked up one of Turbine's signature belts, and a pair of sunglassses. Perfecto!

A Fashionista's Birthday in Hali

I spent today doing loads of things worth doing on one's birthday, including visiting Dressed in Time, Elsie's Clothing, Clotheshorse and Sweet Pea Boutique. Obviously, vintage and new clothing makes me smile.

From June 17-27, visit The Artists' Quarter on Agricola St. for Out of the Blue: A letter from Lesotho.

I had the chance to meet the artist behind this exhibit, Emma Fitzgerald, during a sewing class at NSCAD. Her work examines the denim industry in Lesotho, a small African country, and its impact on the environment and the social fabric.

Here are some snippets from her artist statement:
"...the landscape it is blue, piles of denim, and it is burning, and it is sharp... blue, it is the colour of the sky, both in Lesotho and here in Canada. out of the blue i write this letter to you, and to Lesotho."

It's finally starting to feel like real honest-to-goodness summer, and I feel I must divulge some of my big fashion do's for the heat:

1. Explore fashion.
With the summer heat comes the urge to get out and walk around. Take a stroll up Barrington, or along the waterfront, or on Spring Garden, and stop in some shops and boutiques you hardly ever (or never) get to. On my list for this summer: Turbine, Joanne David, Biscuit, Allie's Boutique, and anything else that catches my attention!

On the top of my shopping list: One of these fabulous wrap belts from Turbine.

2. Be bright. Be bold. I found a bright orange dress from Pure Alfred Sung last year and I got so many compliments because the color just popped! It brightened the day, and it put a smile on people's faces. Of course, clowns get a similar reaction, but if you can bring a burst of fun to the day without wearing a rubber nose, it'll be a great summer!

I spotted this delightfully pink frock on etsy and it is just what I mean!

3. Pick shoes for comfort, color and character - it takes me a long time to find the perfect pair of shoes, but I always keep looking. In fact, I've been on the hunt for a pair of red flats all year. My big secret - when I find the perfect pair, I can always afford them. Hell, if you're looking for a year without settling for a pair you're not in love with, think of all the money you have saved! Your feet deserve it <3

(Secret #2: I occasionally give in and buy a less expensive - less supportive - pair just for fashion's sake. My fave online place for cheap and trendy summer sandals is gojane.com)

4. Wear white (all year long). It is such a fresh color, and it can really add a great pop to an outfit as well. I'm with Herald columnist Eva Hoare, we don't have to wait for the queen's birthday to pull the white out of the closet! Read her article here

Sorry for my absence from the blogosphere. Life has been insanely busy at work (and in general), and I have been making a fab birthday present for one of my dearest friends - hopefully I will remember to take some photos and post them after he opens it!

On another note, the lovely Missy B. has returned from New York. What were her thoughts on fashion trends in the big apple? Rompers and canvas sneakers were big - must try both.

Greetings Hali-fashionistas and welcome to the wild world of NSCAD Wearable Art.

Pre-show: The centre was alive with hair, makeup, photography, and excitement. Getting the first glimpse of the amazing looks presented on stage was phenomenal. When the lights went down for the runway checks, the anticipation was almost unbearable!

My review begins at Set #4. It's fairly tragic that I missed the first three sets, but someone had to watch the door and let in the wonderful audience! And there was so much to take in no matter when the show truly started for you.

Paper Doll Dress by Hannah Newton & Laura Dempsey: These paper doll dresses seemed very couture-inspired. They were fabulously detailed, especially considering the fact that they were made of paper. Imagine how easily they could have been torn! What a fabulous job.

During the intermission, the crowds had the opportunity to check out designs up close including these:

The piece affectionately called "Pig guts", which I must admit I saw long before the show while snooping around the fashion studio after sewing class, was strangely beautiful. Deservedly... it was quite a long process to put it together.

The on-stage transformation of the Pheonix Dress, by Derrick Dixon, was accompanied by a video showing the actual burning of the dress which transformed it in the first place. Photos were also displayed upstairs, showing the first stage with its neutrals, and the final stages with the skirt full of color.

Watching the fire burn away the thread that held the neutrals in place over the colored layers was simply mesmerizing.

I'm sure I could spend hours watching videos of Viktor & Rolf fashion shows. Recently I've watched the Cutting Edge Couture runway video on their website, from the Spring/Summer 2010 collection. You must watch it, its far too hard to describe. Imagine a model dressed in 30 layers on a revolving disk, being undressed by V & R layer by layer, and having her clothing put on other models to walk the runway. It is so imaginative.

Another fabulous creation from the minds of these fab designers is the line that uses tulle in completely unexpected ways:

Love. Love. Love.

10th Anniversary Tea Party Celebration - Dress for Success Event

I had the pleasure of volunteering today with Turbine designer Lisa Drader-Murphy and her team at the 10th Anniversary Tea Party Celebration and Fashion Show in support of Dress for Success.

Great event checklist:

Shopping, check.
Silent Auction full of great items, check.
Fabulous band, check. (The always classy Tom Collins Band)
Extra fun elements, like psychic readings, check.
Fabulous fashion show, big check!
All for a good cause, super bonus!

Throughout the fashion show, we were backstage helping the models find their next outfit being showcased by Turbine. There were bright colors, fabulous patterns, and stylish accessories. Hectic, hectic, hectic, and so much fun! Thanks to the Turbine team for letting me help out.

I have absolutely no pictures of the show itself because I was backstage, but it was well worth it!

After the show the clothing was wheeled out and the audience went crazy for Lisa's designs! All in all, it was a great event for everyone.

Gratuitous Fashion Love

I love fashion (clearly) and today I feel the need to express this love by showing you some recent looks by Dolce and Gabbana. They, I must say, are looks I would love to rock. This is the thing about fashion that is most impressive, D&G has been around since before I was BORN and they are still totally contemporary.

P.S. Newsflash - curves are back! Busty beauties have been representing in recent fashion shows. I love it. This, ladies and gents, is the world of fashion today!

Atlantic Fashion Week - Designer Showcase

What a great night the Designer Showcase turned out to be, despite the cold weather! This time the venue was the World Trade Convention Centre in Windows on the 8th floor. Decor was excellent! Every seat felt like the front row because of the layout, and the runway took an interesting twist around the room.

The room was comfortably full - not too packed, but not empty feeling. There was excitement in the air. My seat was luckily close to the point in the runway where the models stopped for photos, so I got a few from the side view that show off the lovely designs of the evening.

The show began with Lisa Drader-Murphy and Joanne Lawen as our lovely MCs, introducing the show and everyone involved. They looked super stylish - Lisa was rocking some absolutely fabulous red shoes, and Joanne was wearing an equally fabulous multi-layered pinstripe skirt. (I was at the wrong end of the room, so my photos don't really do them justice!)

Stanfields was up first with some samples of Nova Scotian made underwear. All I can say is, there are some good looking men in Halifax, and underwear have never seemed so in style.

Next on the runway was Maxwell-John Designs. They have definitely leapt on the chance to develop sexy and fun clothing for women. I could truly see my friends going out in their frocks.

Third to the stage was 3 Elements. The looks were perfectly girly, and so great for summer.

I am a huge fan of the pieces decorated with the fabric flowers. They look so delicate and fresh.

Sunsets on the Eastside was up next. I was expecting something fresh and energetic, and I wasn't disappointed when the runway was filled with neutral pieces energized with bright patterns. I won't dwell on the fact that they are amazing designers. I will, however, post a photo of my fave look, and of the designers themselves. Orphanage Clothing served us something edgy and creative, as they always do, with the big shoulders that plenty of designers have been using this year. They seem to be more organic as part of Orphanage's line though, not just part of the trend.

I also adore the look of zippers along the length of an outfit, as with both pieces pictured! So stylish.

Last but most certainly not least, Veronica MacIsaac's line took the stage. Prepare to be dazzled by a plethora of celtic inspired outfits, inspired this year by the late great Alexander McQueen.

The Designer Showcase, as expected, was exciting and inspiring. I can't wait for the next season!

Day 7: Babs Bunny

My apologies on this, the last day of my cartoon fashion challenge - this is more of an "inspired by" and less of a "true representation".

My inspiration? Babs Bunny from Tiny Toons. She was quite a memorable character, and I enjoyed copying her color palette and outfit basics. I wore two yellow bows in my hair, a simple purple tshirt, and a sweet black jumper. I think I would fit in if I were to visit Acme Acres.

Day 6: Natasha

The past few days have felt a bit too sweet, I thought it might be time to throw in one of the bad girls of cartoon - Natasha from Rocky & Bullwinkle.

Although bumbling, Boris and Natasha were my favorite cartoon villains. Here I am, evading the law in a purple dress inspired by the treacherous Natasha herself.

LG Fashion Week 2010

Get ready for a ton of posts while I watch today's Fashion Television and catch up with all of my recent fashion thoughts after the whirlwind of AFW.

First up: Review of LG Fashion Week

My favorites included pieces from (in no particular order):

Katrina Tuttle. This local fashion maven has been living and breathing fashion since her younger days, and she has recently risen to the top of the fashion scene in Atlantic Canada. She was the first east coast designer to participate in Toronto's Fashion Week. She is a great ambassador for the Halifax fashion scene for many reasons, including fabulous quotes like: "I believe that great fashion comes from an incredible passion and the rawest forms of inspiration."

The pieces she showed in Toronto were lovely neutrals with fantastic layering possbilities. Her tailoring and the details in each piece are just phenomenal and give her line so much character.

Preloved. Since 1995, this line has been providing the fashion world with pieces created from "rebuilt" vintage clothing. Very interesting looks:

Lovas by Wesley Badanjak. The pieces presented by Badanjak are truly, as described, modern silhouettes. They look like they belong on the runway, but I could easily see myself wearing any one of these looks in the daily grind.

I especially love the bright pinks, which bring out lovely visions of spring.

David Dixon. I really wanted to be in love with Dixon's Barbie line, but it felt retro in a way that I just don't think was my style. I did, however, love his own line with pieces like this dress, which I would fully endorse my Barbie wearing:

Coccolily. I really adore the entire aesthetic of the show, with the big curly hair and the natural and edgy blend of makeup. The collection was a perfect combination of work and play, with terrifically feminine details like ruffles, pouf sleeves, bows, and lace. You can see that designer Naana Tennachie Yankey stays true to the idea that women deserve to be draped in luxury.

Evan Biddell. I have a certain sense of fondness towards Biddell because I have a certain friend who was absolutely in love with him. The clothes, though, speak for themselves. The amount of detail in these two dresses is to die for.

To tell you the truth, there were a few pieces that I was not too fond of in fashion week overall, but fashion is meant to be loved, and I feel like there's no point in sharing anything else!

Day 5: Daisy Duck

Daisy Duck is so lovely, while leaning towards all colors that are girly.

I copied her purple shirt with slightly poufy sleeves, and her pink bow (on a much smaller scale - thanks Missy!). Because I was heading to work, I had to add something on the bottom half (and also because I'm not a partial nudist) - I hope Daisy would enjoy this skirt :)

Day 4: Snow White

This was a lovely challenge. I really loved Snow White as a girl because we were equally pale.
I spent the day in a modest blue dress, a la Ms. White, along with a yellow belt (I didn't have a yellow skirt.. opps).

The perfect red hair bow, courtesy of my lovely friend Missy (http://melissabee-honeysongs.blogspot.com/) totally made the outfit... along with the apple. That apple was my breakfast - no evil witches in my neck of the woods!

Day 3: Pebbles Flintstone

Pebbles wasn't really a literal translation. Yes, she's a cartoon (which is part of the challenge), but she's also prehistoric. I tried to bring her look into the modern day just a tad.

Pebbles was always in the super feminine animal print... without a super fabulous pink zebra print shirt, I opted for a pink leopard print scarf.

Rather than sporting a bone in my hair, I wore an elastic with chunky white beads around my high HIGH ponytail.

I hope Pebbles would approve!

Day 2: April O'Neil

I must admit, April O'Neil was a bit easier because I had the perfect yellow jacket. It was a thrift store find - fabulous for Spring. It has the slightly popped collar, like April usually wore hers.

April always rocked the full yellow jumpsuit (which sadly, I don't have), with the white belt and boots. I sported some white shoes with this, and a no nonsense hair do - Ms. O'Neil was a hard hitting reporter, so the hair has to be all-business (and totally 80s on her, not so much in my version).

I was a fully-obsessed Ninja Turtles fan as a child, so this was a fun look to try!

Day 1: Daphne

Greetings day 1!

Daphne was a pretty easy inspiration for the first day. It's still a bit chilly in the city, although its spring, so I had to add some tights. I think she would approve.

Really, unlike most cartoon characters, Daphne was pretty fashionable. The purple and green is actually a delightful color combo. I was happy to be her for a day.

In this photo, I'm trying to solve the mystery of what snacks to serve at my cousin's birthday bash. The answer:

Black forest cake.

Students in the department will showcase pieces created this year. The show will be followed by an open house at the Costume Studies Studio. Sounds quite interesting!

Co-MCs - Joanne Lawen of Joanne David (which you know I love) and Lisa Drader-Murphy of Turbine Clothing (who I will be volunteering with for the Dress for Success event on the 18th!)

15th. Emerging Designer Showcase. 15 emerging designers have been announced for this show - there should be some fresh and fabulous designs!

16th. Designer Showcase. This time around the showcase is taking place at the World Trade Centre. New digs, same great designers! The designers I featured last year, Sunsets on the Eastside and Veronica MacIsaac, will both be showing again. It should be a great night!

18th. Gala Event. Fashion Week is partnering with Maritime Beauty to throw a huge event!

April 18th: 10th Anniversary Tea Party Celebration, Dress for Success Halifax Event
Tickets: $45
An afternoon of fashion, including the unveiling of Turbine's Spring/Summer 2010 collection, a fashion marketplace full of booths selling beautiful local pieces, and a live performance from the Tom Collins band.

Proceeds go to Dress for Success Halifax! It's a good cause - come out and support!

April 21st: NSCAD Wearable Art Show, 20th Annual
The runway/performance show features pieces of wearable art dreamed up by NSCAD students. It's a show that's sure to be full of surprises!

A Fashionista's Spring Challenge

I truly enjoyed my fashion project in the Winter (the 25 days of fashion). I have been looking for a Spring project, and I was recently inspired by my fellow Halifax fashion bloggers (see the last post).

Although I am perhaps not daring enough to dress as Carrie Bradshaw for a week, I have come up with my own challenge - for the next 7 days I'm going to dress as some of my favorite cartoon females! It will take some creativity for sure.

Fashion Reincarnation

My first big project of the Spring (first of many, hopefully) was repurposing my Mom's old leather jacket. It was very 80s, and now it's kind of cropped & fabulous.

I had to take in the arms and the sides, hem the bottom, change the neckline, add a zipper... holy moly! It was a mild success - the inside is a bit of a mess, but no one will see that while it's being worn (again, hopefully).

Park Lane Perusing

I actually paid a visit to Park Lane Mall yesterday (real shopping world, hello!) with my cousin Emily.

First stop, P'Lovers, to check out some fabulous eco products. I enjoy the silk scarves :)

Next stop, Envy and Pseudio, for some hot outfits for a night out. At Pseudio we found a bunch of sales, and I picked up two tunic style shirts that will be fabulous for spring and summer. My favorite thing to purchase right now is a nice tunic that can be worn with tights now and none later!

Fashion with Purpose

It's always great to merge fashion with passion, and International Sanctuary does just that by allowing victims of human trafficking to create something beautiful. The jewelry created by these survivors is super fashionable, and working on the handcrafts helps them gain skills to help them become independant.

As I was attempting to save money (perhaps for a future trip to Montreal.. perhaps to pay off the VISA bill from the trip to Toronto) I happened across the sale table at Joanne David (1276 Barrington Street). I couldn't pass up a good deal or a fabulous headband, could I? At 60% off?! No way!

Here is my purchase du jour. I have been wanting something made of zipper since it came into fashion!

Twinkle, twinkle, little bat!

So many recent things to blog about - one of them is the release of Tom Binns' Alice in Wonderland jewelry collection. I am absolutely in love with Alice in Wonderland (and was the Mad Hatter for Halloween this year).

I love the items with all the crazy hearts (see the earrings to the left), but I am not super keen on the keyholes with the images inside. Finally - The T.O. Blog

I am taking a break from cutting out pieces of fabric for my sewing class design. Thank goodness, because I need to post all the fashionable details of my Toronto trip.

Stop #1: Forever 21. Hooray! I must say, it has been a long wait. Ordering cute headbands and tops from the website just isn't the same. I was in such a hurry to get there that I ditched my suitcases with the bellhop at the hotel instead of actually checking into the room first.

It was actually really refreshing to be in a store where you could create so many looks. I was equally impressed (as someone who works in retail) that they had someone to greet you at the door.

I picked up a few cardigans (like 5 - when they are $20 its hard to say no!).

I also got this adorable owl necklace. This is a big deal because I rarely wear jewelry, but it was just too cute.

Stop #2: After Forever 21, I checked my bags and went for Dim Sum with my travel-mate. I wore one of those brand new cardigans, and loved the total chaos of the Dim Sum place. I ate so many things I could not even pick out of a line-up - choosing your food from a cart while the waitress yells the names of dishes in chinese takes some skill. Quite an experience.

Stop #3: Leigh & Harlow. Pure class, and yet, totally casual clothing. I didn't get anything - I think I had cold feet for Toronto-shopping. If I ever go back to T.O. I will definitely pick up some of their printed tees. They also had cute tops with great detailing (see the photo!).

Stop #4: Fresh Collective. This is actually really a refreshing idea. It is a designer run boutique on Queen St. W. Designers display and sell their products in the shop, and they each work there one night a week. I saw so many designs I wanted to take home with me, but I settled on this fabulous top from 'the candi factory' (I'm almost positive):

Stop #5: I could have sworn I read about Katie in a magazine, but I can not remember which one (of course). The dresses are all one-size-fits-all, and there are plenty of styles. To tell the truth, I was actually pretty impressed that the one-size-fits-all thing held true. The frocks had really elastic waists, so they looked like they would fit a much smaller size, but I found a bunch that fit me, and I'm usually an XL.

"Fashion, Put It All On Me"

Although I am still working on my post from T.O. (things have been busy), I feel it is completely necessary to move away from that topic for at least one post to discuss some recent news.

Fashion legend Alexander McQueen was found dead this week in his London home. The genius of color, texture and style was born in London and became a clothing designer at a very young age (he began his career at 16).

Anna Wintour called him "one of the greatest talents of his generation."

He created garments for both famous and everyday fashionistas. He will be remembered for shocking us with his adventurous fashions, and his tragic death. It is a tremendous loss for the world of fashion.

I had been working on a piece about love-inspired clothing for valentines day, but I have scrapped it in favor of a bit of McQueen inspired art (I hope it still makes you feel a little bit of love and romance)

I am working on a post about the wonders of fashion in Toronto as we speak, but in the meantime I wanted to let you in on a secret: I picked a Halloween costume for this year (you are going to be SO excited!)

(Yes, it is very very early to be thinking of such things, but I LOVE Halloween, and I was inspired during my trip.)

I am going to be a peacock!

My original inspiration came from this fabulous peacock ballet outfit in a costume shop called Malabar. Ha-cha-cha.

I picked up a pair of fake eyelashes with a streak of bright green, and a pair of bright blue tights. It's obviously a bit of a complicated costume, so I'm glad I came up with the idea now. I'm thinking outrageous and bright eye makeup, and tons of strategically placed feathers.

Fashionista's Guide to Packing

Sitting in my living room, watching In Fashion, and starting to pack for my T.O. trip. The more I travel, the more I learn about packing. It's tragic to find yourself in a new city with clothes that are a mess of wrinkles, OR to find yourself without the pieces you want to make a great outfit.

I am being converted to the roll-everything philosophy. I also try to condense by taking one piece instead of two - like a dress instead of a shirt and skirt.

And, call me an over-planner, but I like to make a list of the outfits I'll need to wear each day. Then I will always throw in a few casual pieces for hanging out in the hotel. And, of course, something hot for a trip to the bar, if that's part of the game plan!

So, here is the current list (it's a 10 day trip... so it's extensive):

Tops (9 - I'm a fan of layers. I may try to cut down on these.)
-purple button-down structed shirt, turquoise sweater shirt with lacy back detail, purple tshirt
-lacy black camisole
-plain back cardigan, sequined black cardigan, leopard print cardigan
-professional grey vest, beige short-sleeved blazer

Frocks (5)
-drapy dress with purple/grey/black dots and sweatheart neckline (it's new!), fitted blue dress with a simple neckline and cap sleeves, simple grey work dress, purple dress with keyhole neckline, black jumper

Bottoms (5)
-simple black pants, grey pants, black jeans, blue jeans
-black tights

I find myself thinking about baggage

So I am desperately trying to decide what kind of design I will use for the bag I am making in sewing class right after I get back from Toronto... hooray!

Here are some ideas of the basic shape I want. I hope it's doable:
For fabric I'm hoping to re-purpose the pieces I have chopped off of a long jacket my aunt got me, and I promptly stained... I'm going to hem it and restore it to its original glory :) Its an amazing brown patterned fabric. I'm hoping to use handles from an old bag that I now use as a laundry basket. I'm all about re-using!

I hope it turns out okay. I'll let you know!

So I Can Sew

I started my NSCAD class tonight - Sewing Techniques.

Project #1 - Make a nametag from fabric. Be creative.

Project #2 - Lounge pants. For sleeping. Okay, pajama pants, but that just sounds a little silly to me! Either way, I am already coming up with ideas.

Project #3 - The bag. Any style, any function - using all kinds of skills like zippers.. I am extremely excited to learn how to put in a zipper. There are so many things I could fix in my wardrobe if I could do zippers! Plus, I'm going to create a fab bag!

Ringing in the New Year inspired me to think to the future! It's a new decade, and things are bound to change for the better - including Barbie!

I would love to see a fresh, fun look for Barbie. She is a risk-taker, I'm sure! And practical, too. I mean, she has all those careers under her belt! So a dress with an elaborate neckline eliminates the need for a necklace.

A retro polka-dotted jacket can dress her up for work, while a flirty headband is perfect for night life. Ohhh Barbie, you're set for the new year! What a fashionista!

New Years Eve 2010

This blue dress is the new love of my life. It was a Christmas gift from the best aunt ever, and the thin belt makes it a bit edgier for NYE.

I wore it to work earlier in the day, and it was quite perfect for that too.

My black tights were not totally opaque... I find it hard to choose between the sheer and the opaque. What is the fashionable thing these days?

Also, my grandmother called this dress "slinky dinky". I'm not sure what that means, but it makes me laugh.

Looking Forward to 2010

The 25 days of Fashion have inspired me to think of other ways I can give back to the world. It's not totally a fashion topic, but being charitable is always fashionable!

Here are my top 5 causes to give to in the new year:

Heifer International. This organization works to end hunger and poverty. By giving animals to families in need, they empower people to turn poverty into hope. I can totally get behind that.
I found out about it from here (this girl is hilarious, by the way)
When you give to the charity, you actually get to pick which animal you want to send to a family in poverty, so there are lots of different price ranges (like a flock of ducks - only $20!)

The Girl Effect. If you visit their website, it says "The World is a Mess. Agree or Disagree." Their solution? Encouraging girls to make a positive change in the world, because their participation in society can alter everything.
I found out about this one on facebook - see, it's good for something!

Bust a Move For Breast Health. This charity event is local, and super specific, but it represents something I feel strongly about. It's bringing people together to have fun and create opportunities for Nova Scotian women to have world-class breast health services. Cancer has really wreaked havoc with my family, and my Nan had breast cancer, so I support the cause, and it's not often you find a fundraiser that is truly FUN!

Provincial Autism Centre - Autism Golf Ball. Speaking of fun events, I somehow got hooked up with this super fun event where important people in Halifax come together to play mini golf, eat, drink, laugh, spend a bunch of money on superb silent auction prizes, dance,... and support an organization that supports kids and families with autism. The best part about the P.A.C., in my opinion, is that they really know their stuff - for families in NS, it's sometimes hard to find people who actually understand what autism means.
I volunteer with the P.A.C. to help plan the Golf Ball, and I'm hoping to get involved with some of their programs for autistic kids in the new year!

Saint Leonards Society of NS. I know people don't believe me when I say this, but if my parents had not had such strong and supportive family members during my childhood, we would have been homeless. I don't think that's an exaggeration. I also don't think it's an exaggeration to say that I have come a long way, and I can really give back now, to people who didn't have that support network. I think its amazing that Saint Leonards tries to provide something like that for people who are down on thier luck. It is so easy to get to that point.
This is where all my Christmas donations went!

I hope in the New Year everyone can find 5 causes they believe in so strongly. Happy 2010!

From day 20 - 25. A little sad my 25 days are over!

Day 20 - That lovely purple H&M shirt again. This time, paired with my black sweater. Very cute, and it cinches the waist without the obviousness of a belt!

Day 21 - The orange and pink dress.
Truly, this is a summer dress. It is. It's my favorite on a summer work day, with a white belt.
For winter, I ditched the belt and paired it with some black tights. It gets a ton of compliments, but I imagine that's only because the summer colors brighten people's days.

Day 22 - Purple dress (you've seen it), black tights (staple), and a leopard print cardigan. Its probably my favorite piece of clothing ever.

Day 23 - I used that trusty black jumper again, with a summery purple floral shirt and grey tights to make it a little more winter-sensible.

Day 24 - Gladiator-esque shirt (maybe?), black shrug (fantastical), white belt (to dress it up), and those black jeans. A good way to end my run.

Day 25 - I took my leftover clothes to the shelter, along with a bunch of stuff my lovely friends brought over (on about day 10 I believe). They were so happy to have it, and I was happy to give it. Win. Win.

15-19

Day 15 - This jacket is a challenge. I can never figure out when or how to wear it. I do think that it looked good with this outfit - this black and white skirt is from the Alfred Sung collection for Zellers (love). Underneath, is a basic purple tshirt.

Day 16 - Black tights, black jumper, and a grey tshirt that I got in Calgs (which has since been ruined... I am really really spilly. Honestly, people shouldn't let me have nice things).

Day 17 - That purple dress again! This time with simple black tights. Sometimes you just have to let a piece of clothing stand on its own.

Task for the night: Going out with a friend for her birthday. This purple shirt is a little too "open" without the camisole underneath. With it - perfecto. Add a black cardigan and its good for a restaurant and a bar. Score!

Day 18 - This tshirt is positively ugly on its own (which is why I bought it on sale). The sleeves look great under my jumper though. The yellow belt adds a little excitement.

Day 19 - Easy for a lazy day - those grey pants that don't quite look crisp, purple tshirt, and my black buttoned cardy. Not the best look, not the most effort.

11-14

Holy moly, lets play catch-up.

Day 11 - Old brown sweater (still comfy), that purple floral H&M shirt (a good pop of color), and dark jeans.

Day 12 - Purple dress with black button accent on the top, and little beige jacket to make it more work-worthy. Two of my favorite pieces.

Day 13 - Casual - these clothes are all pretty much recycled from other outfits. Dark jeans, grey sweater, black camisole.. pretty basic.

Day 14 - Light blue button-down shirt with ruching by the waist. It has seen me through many a work day plus a few bar nights. These grey pants are wide legged, but they don't really seem totally crisp.. I may need to find a new pair! (Good excuse to go shopping. Although that is not the point of the 25 days of fashion.)

Day 10: From pattern to party

This patterned tshirt has been a favorite for a long time - although this pattern could totally look tacky, something about it totally appeals to me.

My party outfit was kind of "greek", as my friend Blair described it. The black top with gold detail around the neck gives a vaguely Cleopatra feel, while my little black shrug made it a little more dressy. Tights on the bottom made it a little more sexy and comfortable, rather than a skirt or jeans.

Day 9: Feeling fine... more or less

Day 8: What's old is new again

I haven't worn this skirt in ages, so I made it into a high-waisted number to stick with the fashions of today. Hooray!

I find it totally brutal to pair brown with other colors, so I was happy the purple seemed to work.

Day 6 and 7: Flu or fashion?

Here I am, stuck at home with the fluuuu. Wore the black jumper and tights with a sweet grey sweater with 3/4 length sleeves to go to work in the morning - got sent home with the flu (I suspected it was a hangover, although I only had 3 beer the night before, but after two days - sooo not a hangover). When I got home, I changed into a casual blue sweater... kept the tights.

Then, the next morning, I changed nito a grey tshirt and purple floral hoodie to head to the clinic. Hoorah!

Suspiciously, I am wearing tights in all three of these pictures... yes I wore the same pair of tights for the whole two days of flu.
Sue me!

Merry Monday festivities after work called for this new purple dress, paired with a black shrug. I am amazed by the fabulousness of this dress - I have been looking all over for a great one for work and play, and this one fit both bills. I got it on my recent trip to Calgary :)

Day 4: Sunday Simple

This outfit is perfect for a Sunday shift at work. It's the last Sunday of our season, so dark wash jeans are perfecto. Casual is the key. The turquoise top is comfortable and work-friendly, but the lace cutout on the back makes it much more interesting!

During a trip to Montreal this year, some beautiful friends of mine were shopping in Top Shop, and I became completely disillusioned with fashion for a brief moment. This was because I had heard rave RAVE reviews about TopShop in the past, and it felt more like... well... cheapness (I mean no offense. truly. And pleeease prove me wrong :))

It turns out however, that they are not one in the same. The Top Shop we visited is not the famed TopShop from the UK, which is reportedly coming to Canada soon (as in not yet, as in we were NOT in it already and I have no cause to worry about the state of fashion).

Although I can't find any info about their Canada location on their website, lets hope it is true. And for further proof, check out this article:

Toronto Planning

I am just realizing that I have a trip booked in late Jan./early Feb. to go to Toronto for work, and I have a whole free day to go shopping!

Please please please let me know if you have any insights into the best shops and stops in the big city :)

Day 3: Casual Saturday

So I'm wearing the same jeans I wore yesterday. I hope that's not considered cheating, because they are my favorite jeans by far. :)

The purple patterned shirt underneath is fabulous from H&M. I saw it on a girl and work and then found it in the store! Score! And the black shirt on top is just a comfortable slouchy shirt with a little bit of a pleat around the neckline from Joe Fresh.

To step outside in the warm-for-this-time-of-year Halifax weather, I threw on this adorable yellow jacket I found at (gasp!) Value Village. I love its huge pockets and big yellow buttons. I took pictures but, shamefully, they're blurry as hell.

Day 2: Night and day in grey

Outfit 1: Grey short-sleeved sweater, purchased during my Calgary trip, majorly on sale (I love the poufy sleeves) + short black jumper.
I love this jumper for many reasons. One of these reasons is that even if I get a stain on the front of a fave shirt I can still wear it under the jumper... slob much?

Outfit 2: Another grey shirt from Calgary. I saw it in the mall full price, and I was only buying things on sale so I didn't try it on, but I went back the next day to get it :) Thank gawd they still had my size! I love the embellished neckline... it's like a necklace without all the hassle! It's super unique. Paired it with straight dark jeans.

School me in some fashion

Day 1: A little bit of a pink lady

This was the first day of the 25.

What did I wear? To work I wore a grey sweater from Jacob, black skirt from a thrift shop with pleats along the bottom, and a cute pink headband with a bow from Forever 21.

The headband was a hit - I got many compliments on it throughout the day.

After work I changed into jeans and the rest of the outfit stayed the same :) That's what I call easy peasy.

The 25 Days of Fashion

As I gear up for Christmas, I'm planning on hosting a Christmas party/charity drive. My friends will come with gifts galore for the homeless shelters in Halifax, and I am unsure what to give. Maybe I will wait to see what the masses bring before I decide, but for now I have decided to give some of my lesser-worn clothes to the womens' shelter as a first step.

Keeping that in mind, for the next 25 days I'm going to try my damndest to wear something different each day. I'll post the outfits I wear to the blog, and anything that doesn't get worn gets given!

Shopping at the market on Saturday morning for some spreadable gouda cheese for my lovely friend Nicole, who I am going to visit in like 2 weeks (!!!), I stumbled across some absolutely beautiful bags. They are done by Michelle Saint Onge. You can view some of her stuff here:

The young designers of Sunsets on the Eastside came up with some totally cute floral frocks, while remaining totally stylish and cool themselves. They have been working together for 2 years, and it looks like they are a great team.

I'm also a little partial to them because while walking along Barrington the day after the show I thinkkk I saw them packing up their car outside of the downtown hostel - fab designers meet young free spirits. I love it. And even if they weren't staying at the hostel, they were still hanging in my neck of the South-end-woods. It makes me feel a little closer to fashion.

Voila! Here are some of the fabulous looks from designer Veronica MacIssac shown during Atlantic Fashion Week. She incorporates her celtic roots into fresh styles. Absolutely tremendous!

I love the cap-like sleeves on this dress. Its classic. Its downright hot.

I'm absolutely obsessed with this. Its sweet and so versatile - it appeals to the celtic side of me, as well as the woodsy side I feel when I think about growing up in the country. Plus, its flattering and gorgeous.

I never thought plaid could look sooo sexy, and kind of like old hollywood.

And I never thought I'd want to wear plaid to the beach - true fashion pulls you out of your norm and expands boundaries.

Atlantic Fashion Week

As promised, I'm going to be posting my thoughts on Atlantic Fashion Week!
I only made it to one fashion show (of two), but some of the lines blew me away a little.

I think half the fun of a fashion show is watching what the audience is wearing. I love walking into a room lacking in total fashion fails. It gives me so much inspiration. I also realized, while observing the room from my seat in the back (good for roaming to take pictures), that I am totally jealous of fasionable people who can pull off the pixie cut. My hair is far too curly.

There was fab and not so fab in each line, but some of my fave pieces shown were by Lee Latagan, Sunsets on the Eastside, and Veronica MacIssac.
